A good one runs silently for a decade and never once crosses your mind. Getting it right comes down to three decisions – and in that order.

Why Your PSU Choice Actually Matters
Every component in your PC draws power through the PSU. When the PSU delivers unstable or unclean power, components don’t fail immediately – they degrade. Capacitors age faster. Storage corrupts data. GPUs behave erratically under load. The damage often isn’t visible until it’s too late.
Modern GPUs make this more critical than ever. Cards like the RTX 5080 and 5090 draw power in large, sharp spikes rather than a steady load. A PSU that can’t handle transient spikes – even briefly – can cause crashes, instability, or in extreme cases, connector damage. SPL’s PSU Tier List is the most comprehensive community resource for cutting through marketing noise and understanding which units actually perform.
Step 1 – Work Out How Much Wattage You Need
Start with your GPU. It’s the dominant power draw in any gaming or workstation build. Add your CPU, then everything else is relatively minor by comparison.
As a practical guide based on current hardware:
- Budget builds (RTX 5060 / RX 9060): 550-650W is plenty
- Mid-range builds (RTX 5070 / RX 9070 XT): 750-850W
- High-end builds (RTX 5080): 850-1000W
- Flagship builds (RTX 5090): 1000-1200W minimum
Add 15-20% headroom on top. This accounts for power spikes, aging components, and any future upgrades. A PSU running at 60-70% load runs cooler, quieter, and more efficiently than one pushed to 90%.
Don’t use a generic online wattage calculator as your only reference. They often underestimate peak draw, particularly for RTX 4000 and 5000 series cards. If in doubt, go one tier up in wattage – the price difference between 850W and 1000W is usually under £20.
Step 2 – Choose the Right Tier
Wattage tells you how much power a PSU can deliver. Tier tells you how well it delivers it. A high-wattage PSU from a poor platform can still cause instability, noise, and hardware damage. This is where most people go wrong – they buy based on wattage and brand name alone.
The SPL Tier List uses a six-tier system based on topology, voltage regulation, build quality, and real-world testing:
- Tier A (and A+): Recommended for high-end builds. RTX 5080, 5090, 4090 territory. LLC resonant conversion, DC-DC regulation, solid transient response.
- Tier B: Recommended for mid-range builds. RTX 5070, RX 9070 XT. Good quality, good value.
- Tier C: Budget builds with lower-end or older hardware. RTX 5060, older 30-series cards. Acceptable, not ideal for anything demanding.
- Tier D: Home or office PCs with no dedicated GPU. Not suitable for gaming.
- Tier E / F: Avoid entirely. Units at these tiers have known issues with voltage regulation, protection circuits, or safety. Tier F units should be disconnected and replaced immediately if already in use.
For any gaming build, Tier B is the minimum. For anything with an RTX 5080 or higher, Tier A is the sensible choice. The premium over a Tier C unit is typically £20-£50 – less than the cost of a single hour of troubleshooting an unstable system.
A Note on 80 Plus Ratings
80 Plus Bronze, Gold, Platinum, Titanium – these are efficiency ratings, not quality ratings. A Gold-rated PSU is not necessarily better built than a Bronze-rated one. Gold simply means it converts AC power to DC at 87-92% efficiency. It’s worth having – it reduces heat and electricity costs – but don’t use it as a substitute for tier rating when evaluating quality.

What to Avoid
A few patterns that appear regularly in bad PSU purchases:
- Unbranded or no-name units from Amazon. If the brand doesn’t appear on the SPL tier list at all, treat it as Tier F until proven otherwise.
- Any PSU under £40 for a gaming build. Quality components have a cost floor. Below it, corners are being cut somewhere that matters.
- High wattage as a substitute for quality. A 1200W unit from a Tier D platform is worse for your hardware than an 850W unit from a Tier A platform.
- Old PSUs in new builds. A seven-year-old unit that’s been running continuously may measure fine on a multimeter but have degraded capacitors that fail under the transient loads of modern GPUs. Budget for a new PSU when doing significant hardware upgrades.
The Short Version
Work out your wattage requirement properly and add headroom. Don’t go below Tier B for any gaming build. Within Tier B and A, the Seasonic Focus GX and Corsair RM-e series represent the most consistent value at most wattages.
